How can unease, ridicule or hate be depicted? Encyclopédie de la parole responds with its own weapons: words and music. Following on their magnificent Suite n°1 and Suite n°2, the French artists continue to draw on their extensive collection of audio recordings, which is something of an encyclopaedia of the spoken word in all its forms. This time they are particularly interest-ed in words that for various reasons and to varying degrees people would be reluctant to listen to, such as standardized job interviews, pro-conspiracy rambles or verbal abuse. In Suite n°3 – Europe these are all set to music – 26 pieces performed in the official languages of the European Union. It is a song recital with two singers and a pianist in the European tradition of opera or Sprechgesang. The beautiful melodies allow us to neutralize the unbearable, to laugh at and to momentarily ward off the violence of the forked tongues that are also part of the continent’s reality.

The Encyclopédie de la parole is an artistic project exploring the spoken word in all its forms. Since 2007, this group of musicians, poets, directors, visual artists, actors, sociolinguists, and curators have been collecting all sorts of recordings of words and then indexing them on its website according to their particular properties or phenomena such as cadence, chorality, emphasis, saturation or melody. From this collection, which now includes about 800 sound documents, the Encyclopédie de la parole produces sound pieces, performance and shows, lectures, games and exhibitions.
Joris Lacoste has been writing for theater and radio since 1996 and has been producing his own shows since 2003. He was associate writer at La Colline– Théâtre National in 2006-2007 and from 2007 to 2009 was co-director of the Laboratoires d’Aubervilliers. In 2004 he launched the project Hypnographie to explore artistic uses of hypnosis. He started two collective projects: the project W in 2004, and Encyclopédie de la parole in 2007 with which he has created the shows Parlement (2009), Suite nº1 (2013), Suite nº2 (2015) and Suite n°3 – Europe (2017).
The music of Pierre-Yves Macé, born in 1980 in France, stands at the nexus of contemporary classical, electroacoustic composition and sound art. His music has been performed by the ensemble Cairn, L’Instant Donné, the Orchestre de Chambre de Paris, the Hong Kong Sinfonietta and Les Cris de Paris, and has been released by the Tzadik, Orkhêstra, Sub Rosa and Brocoli labels. Macé has been invited and/or commissioned new pieces by the Festival d’Automne (Paris), Villette Sonique (Paris), Ars Musica (Brussels), Les Musiques, MIMI (Marseille), AngelicA (Bologna), Santarcangelo (Rimini), Akousma (Montreal), among others. In 2012 he published his thesis in musicology, Musique et document sonore (Music and Sonic Documents). Pierre-Yves Macé has been involved in Encyclopédie de la parole since 2007.
